Latest Gadgets At the Gadget Show Live 2011

Latest Gadgets made its yearly pilgrimage to the Gadget Show Live in Birmingham to play with the latest and greatest tech that manufacturers had to offer. Fighting our way through the bear pit that is the coffee table in the press room, we emerged refreshed and ran around attempting to see as much as possible before the caffeine wore off.

Birmingham Gadget Show LiveiPad stands were ubiquitous, but the only one that actually caught our eye was Cygnett’s that had copied Apple’s Smart Cover technology (well the wake from sleep functionality) and added a stand that works vertically and horizontally – all in a big (and admittedly slightly bulky) leather case. They were stood next to Henge Docks – a great laptop dock that enabled you to use your MacBook with a Widescreen monitor and pretend you have a full desktop. We also had a quick look at the PopBox – a self-styled “Apple TV” killer, that streams your HD content via DLNA and its own app store. And we also played with some wireless Jaybird headphones, the Qb
desktop USB speakers and FlipVideo who surprisingly said nothing about their impending demise.

Of course this is a tiny fraction of what we had a play with so expect to see a few more in-depth articles over the coming week.

Latest Bamboo Stylus

Wacom had just that day released a Bamboo stylus for the iPad. I’m keen doodler and had a quick play. It feels great to hold – and is very close to holding a real pen. It’s also 25 percent slimmer tip than main competitors as the reps insisted on telling me. The prototype app to accompany it (you can of course use the stylus with all drawing apps) looks pretty fun as well but wasn’t yet ready for final assessment. The stylus should be out in mid-May for about £25.

We waved at the people from 3M who were showing off their MPro 180 wireless pico projector rigged up to a PS3 and an iPad. We had a more in-depth look at it here. The most stylish area was the shiny white Golla zone where lots of beautiful people looked over enthusiastic about a range of pretty looking laptop bags and camera cases. We took a look at some here.

Apple iPad standsOur first stop was Brasso who had a little stall set up to clean all our gadgets. As an owner of a filthy iPhone, iPad and pair of glasses it was nice to have someone give them a quick wipedown. Plus there was cake. Orbitsound had their T3 mobile stereo speaker on display – a little iPod classic shaped unit that provides stereo sound on the go – and that can be worn around the neck to create a sound aura. Amazing. Also a potential nightmare if young kids on London buses get hold of it.

Samsung Slimmest Mobile GALAXY S II

Samsung Slimmest Mobile GALAXY S II

Samsung Galaxy S II set for launch

Eagerly awaiting the follow-up to Samsung’s popular smartphone? We’ll let you in on a secret

The Samsung Galaxy S is the most popular Android-powered smartphone from the Korean company, but it’s about to be topped by none other than the Galaxy S II. Yes, the S II is all set to be launched around the world, in fact they’ve announced the phone will be launched in the UK on May 6. So when can we expect it in India? Well if our rumour mill is on the money (and we’d suggest you give it a fair chance), you could pick one of these beauties up as early as June!

So why would you be interested in this? Allow us to introduce you to the S II spec list, and the S II to your wish list. First up, it’s one of the latest additions to the dual-core family, running a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor from Samsung. It’s going to be running Gingerbread, Android’s latest avatar -- well, Samsung’s TouchWiz version of it, at least. That might worry some (most prefer their Android OSs untouched), but Samsung didn’t do a bad job on the S II’s predecessor.

You’ve also got the Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touchscreen, where the ‘Plus’ probably refers to the added screen brightness, which is a welcome addition. The S II also boasts an 8 MP camera, with an LED flash; the latter was conspicuously absent in the Galaxy S. Rounding it all up: the S II holds 1 GB RAM, is available in 16 GB and 32 GB versions, with MicroSD support (up to 32 GB).

Now you know why it’s a big deal. We’re waiting to get our hands on one of these just as much as you probably are.

HTC Sensation to arrive in India by Q2

HTC Sensation to arrive in India
The HTC Sensation was officially introduced to the world at a press conference in London last week, and now, HTC has confirmed the device will be coming to Asian markets including India by Q2, i.e., sometime in May or June.

HTC has also announced via its Twitter feed that the new enhanced UI introduced with the HTC Sensation, known as HTC Sense 3.0, will only be supported by future devices, and, the current generation of HTC phones will not be upgraded to this. This is apparently due to hardware requirements of the new UI, and if the HTC Sensation is the minimum specification for it, these requirements are quite stellar.

The HTC Sensation has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, coupled with the Adreno 220 GPU, part of Qualcomm’s latest MSM8260 Snapdragon chipset. HTC Sense 3.0 UI is also supported by the HTC Flyer, which is no slouch either, featuring a 1.5GHz processor. The HTC EVO 3D, bearing a similar 1.2GHz processor (MSM8660) as the HTC Sensation, will also support it.

For more details about the HTC Sensation, refer to our previous coverage. Check out an official video showcasing the phone below:

Unofficial image of suggested combination Panasonic GF1 + 3D lens

Panasonic Lumix 3D camera with special conversion lens
Currently, 3D shooting with an interchangeable lens system camera is possible only by using panorama systems or by combining two lenses and two CCDs. However, these systems are not ideal and have difficulty capturing moving objects. Panasonic's new 3D lens for the Lumix G Micro System features two optical systems installed within the diameter of the lens mount, creating stereo images from the left and right lenses that are then processed with a 3D image processing system. Thanks to Panasonic's advanced technologies in optical technology, image processing systems, and lens barrel design, the 3D lens for the Panasonic Lumix 3D camera will be compact in size.

“This year will be remembered as the ‘First Year of 3D Era’ and Panasonic has already taken the lead by launching 3D-capable VIERA televisions and Blu-ray 3D Disc Players,” said Darin Pepple, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. “With Panasonic’s development of a twin-lens capable of 3D shooting, the company is providing consumers with a way to capture their own 3D content, which they can then enjoy watching in the comforts of their own home. Panasonic is dedicated to evolving the 3D ecosystem, letting consumers create and display lifelike 3D images in their homes.”

This new compact 3D-capable interchangeable lens will be easy to handle and allow instant 3D shooting, without distortion or time lag between left and right images - even when shooting moving objects. As soon as a full production Panasonic Lumix 3D lens is available we will publish a Panasonic Lumix 3D camera review
